Course objectives:
Critical knowledge of the chemical and chemical-physical foundations needed to interpret the behavior and transformations of matter in relation to the main technologies and engineering issues: materials, production and energy accumulation, pollution.

Tables of contents:
Material and its properties. The laws of the chemical combinations. Atomic mass. The mole and the molar mass. Chemical formulas. The balanced chemical reaction equation and stoichiometric calculations. Atomic structure. The Periodic Table of Elements. Chemical bonds: covalent, covalent-polar, ionic, metallic. Hydrocarbons. Gaseous state. Intermolecular forces. Condensed states and phase transformations. State functions and principles of thermodynamics. Entropy and irreversibility: statistical interpretation. Physical equilibria. Phases diagram for a pure substance. Solutions and their properties. Reactions rates and its influencing factors. Chemical reactions: spontaneity and equilibrium condition in chemical reactions, factors that affect chemical equilibrium. Acid-base and solubility equilibria. Oxidation and electrochemical reactions. Galvanic and potential electrochemical cells. Electrolysis.

Lectures, multimedia lessons, numerical exercises.

Assessment will be written (numerical exercises) and oral.
