The course provides the students advanced knowledge on the materials, the methods of fabrication, the mechanical characterization and the non destructive testings on the composite materials. In addition, it shows innovative materials and fabrication technologies.

Introduction to composite materials. Fibers: typologies, properties and commercial products. Matrices: typologies, properties and commercial products. Applications of the composite materials. Methods of fabrication of the composite materials: Hand lay up and spray up; Bag Molding; Filament Winding; Pultrusion; Compression Molding. Micromechanics of lamina: Determination of the elastic constants; Constitutive equation of lamina. Macromechanics of lamina. Constitutive equation of laminate. Symmetric, balanced and symmetric balanced laminates. Short fiber composites. Mechanical characterization of the composite materials: Tensile tests, compression tests, bending tests, interlaminar and intralaminar shear tests. Non destructive testings: Ultrasonic; Radiography; Thermography; Acoustic emission. Superplasticity: Mechanical aspects; Processes; Fields of application. Extraction and production of the Titanium.
