Course objectives:
The course aims to provide the basic knowledge of power electronics, presenting the operating characteristics of the main semiconductor electronic devices, analyzing the fundamental topological structures for the conversion of electrical energy, both in alternating current and in direct current, and illustrating the criteria for the choice and the dimensioning of a conversion system is understood as an element of a more general electromechanical system.

Introduction to Power Electronics - Basic Definitions: medium value, RMSvalue, Fourier series development for a rectangular waveform; energy-band model for semiconductors conduction: PN junction.
AC/DC Converters - Single-phase rectifier, single-phase rectifier with free-wheeling diode, double single-phase rectifier, single-phase bridge rectifier, single-phase half-controlled bridge rectifier,single-phase fully-controlled bridge rectifier. Three-phase AC-DC direct current converters: three-phase bridge rectifier,three-phasehalf-controlled bridge rectifier, three-phase fully-controlled bridge rectifier. AC/DC Bidirectional converter: 2 and 4 quadrants converters, analysis for a not ideal operation relatively to a converter bridge (laboratory activities). Line current waveform in single phase and three phase rectifiers: THD evaluation. Brief notes about thyristor’s snubber circuits.
DC/DC Converter: the chopper - The step-down chopper: principle operating. Continuous and discontinuous chopper operation. The stabilizer chopper. The step-up chopper. The buck-boost chopper. Bi-directional chopper configurations.
The Inverter - Basic Configuration: Current Source Inverter (CSI) and Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). Six-step operation of CSI and VSI. Sine wave modulation. Brief notes about of space vector. Space Vector Modulation (SVM). Overview of multilevel converters.
Applications - Preliminary design and selection criteria for an electric converter. Use of the power converters in the various sectors of mechanical engineering: typical configurations in the rail and tram sector, automotive, naval and aeronautical, industrial sector .

Education method: 
Lectures with the multimedia material support, technical and practical exercises in the laboratory.
