To achieve creative and technical skill about product design from a new idea to engineering development through a participatory contest experience. To know methods for eliciting user needs, concept generation and concept selection, evaluating and improving usability, assemblability, maintainability and safety. To face real problem of product innovation starting from user needs.
The students learn an integrated design approach based on TRIZ methodology in the phase of concept generation, aimed at product innovation .

The product development process from an innovative idea to functional prototype. Design principle: axiomatic design. Implicit user needs and classification of the best product features using Kansei Engineering and Kano methodologies. Emotional design. A systematic approach to innovation: creativity into design process. TRIZ or TIPS methodology. Contradiction Matrix: 40 principles and generalised design parameter. Patent classification. Methods for concept generation and selection. Concept design for quality. Introduction to Robust Design of industrial product: parameter design and tolerance design.. Pareto ANOVA. Noise factors: definition and choice of level.
Concrete design and Design for X. Ergonomics and usability. Robust ergonomic design. Postural risk assessment using virtual manikin. Design for assembly, availability, and safety (RAMS).Designing in VR (Virtual Reality); virtual prototyping and physical prototyping by means of AM technologies. Reverseengineeringtechniques and rapid prototyping in testing new concepts. Case studiesinrailway, aerospace and automotive design.
The teamwork experience contributes the developing of new creative ideas that are submitted to a participatory evaluation to win a classroom contest. Communication skill, open discussion with stakeholders. The project evaluation is carried out both by a panel of internal experts and a jury of students. CAD/CAE and virtual prototyping tools are used. Learning by doing.
