To deepen the basic knowledges on the mechanical behavior of structural materials and the analysis methods of structures and machine elements under service loads, to correctly carry out their design. These aims will be pursued also by a series of analysis and studies on typical machine elements and also on components/structures already treated in previous courses.

Strength and stability of Mechanical Structures. Buckling and post-buckling of components and structures: phenomena analysis, modelling, designing. Behavior of structures under cyclic loading: shake-down and incremental collapse. Special vessels: auto-fretted, multilayer and wrapped vessels. Rotating discs. Curved beams.
Fatigue under variable amplitude loads - Counting Methods - Miner rule - Multiaxial fatigue - Post-yielding fracture mechanics: J integral and CTOD fracture criterions. Crack closure phenomena: modelling and delay effects. Fatigue design philosophies: safe-life, fail-safe and periodic inspections approaches. Stress-corrosion and fatigue-corrosion. Design for creep and creep rupture. Creep-Fatigue interaction. Welded, bolted and riveted joints. Practical examples.
