Course objectives:
To Inform the student about the methods of analysis, design and testing of mechanical and thermal measurement systems for both science and industrial applications. In general, problems connected to the design and use of measurement chains are faced with reference to monitoring, diagnostics and control of systems that involve mechanical and thermal quantities.

Tables of contents: 
Measurement Theory: Classification and schematization of instruments; The transfer function; Spurious signals. Uncertainty, the GUM; Calibration; Generalizedinput/output magnitudes. Signals: analog and digital; Deterministic and stochastic. Fourier's harmonic analysis, the Fourier transform. Test signals. The random signals. Main metrics: from the average value to the spectral power density. Dynamic model of measurement systems; The frequency response curve. Response to test signals; Amplitude attenuation and phase distortion. Signal Conditioning and A / D Conversion: Operational Amplifiers, Circuits for Mathematical operations on signals; Sampling: sample theorem, antialiasing filter. Quantization, S & H circuit, double ramp converter. The A / D falsh converter. Lp and Hp filters of the first order and their transfer functions. Measuring instruments: terminal devices for electrical quantities; sensors for displacement, speed, acceleration, force, temperature. Mechanical systems Control Elements: Open and closed loop control systems; Stability with the Eigenvalue Method, Nyquist Criterion, Roots loci. Influence of sensor dynamics on the stability of the controlled system.

Education method: 
Lessons, exercises and visits to the laboratories.
