Course objectives:
The course aims to provide tools and methods for transport network operations based on the interaction with travel demand (both passengers and freight) with major attention to rail and pedestrian systems. Further insights concern: a) regulatory and organisational aspects in the European Union, Italy and the Campania Region; B) The Decision Support Systems (DSS) with special attention to OpenTrack software.

Concept of modelling and transportation system design. Simulation of transport systems: the area study delimitation, zoning and centroids, the selection of relevant infrastructures and services, the signalling systems, the supply model construction of transportation systems, the flow propagation model, the congestion model, the cost functions, mobility demand concept, the assumption of rational decision-maker, random utility models, passenger demand models, freight demand models, the path and hyper-path choice models, the interaction between travel demand and transportation system performance (assignment), assignment algorithms. The pedestrian trips. Introduction to the design of transport systems: the ‘what if’ approach and the ‘what to’ approach, the design of public transport systems, the multimodal design approach, and the load diagrams for public transport lines. Regulatory and organisational aspects of local public transport: European regulations, Italian regulations, Campania Region regulations, competitive procedures and service contracts, reliability and safety of public transport systems, quality in local public transport companies, the Charter of Mobility. The Decision Support Systems (DSS): GIS software, simulation software of passenger flows, the use of OpenTrack to simulate operations of rail transport systems.

Education method: 
The course is organised into frontal lessons (40%) and numerical and design exercises (60%).

Assessment will be oral.
