The aim of the “Surface Engineering” course is to provide the basic knowledge of materials surface properties and techniques used for their modification. An emphasis will be employed on the description of innovative technologies able to confer, to the items, functional and/or aesthetic properties, other than the base material. Analysis of surface characterization techniques will also be considered.

Surface energy, definitionand determination.Wettability. Adhesion. Surface Design. Surface surveying techniques: XPS, SEM, TEM, EIS, Thin film thickness measurement, Adhesion measurement. Physical vapor deposition (PVD): Vacuum Evaporation, Sputtering, Ion Bombardment. Examples of industrial applications: metallization of packaging films, thin films deposition, hard coating deposition.
Chemical vapor deposition (CVD): DC plasmas, RF plasmas. Plasma-assisted deposition. Examples of industrial applications: deposition of barrier layers on film for packaging, coating of polymer materials, diamond-like thin film deposition, plasma “polymers” synthesis, biocompatible coatings, bio-adhesion. Nanostructured coatings.
Metallic materials degradation: study of the fundamentals of corrosion and material protection.Organic coatings: composition, applications, description of industrial plants.
