The course aims at providing tools and methods for designing motor vehicle main groups and systems. Assisted exercises are carried out on component sizing, leveraging on computer aided design.

Fundamental of locomotion mechanisms. Summary of motion resistance forces. Mechanical properties of propulsion groups. Load on tire. Maximum driving forces. Maximum superable slopes. Setting vehicle's design based on the required performance. Translation groups. Thermo mechanical analysis of clutches. Transients of clutches. Semiautomatic clutches. Synchronizers. Transmission units for gears (semiautomatic and automatic). Hydrodynamic power transmissions. Continuous transmission ratio groups. Cardan and homocinetic joints. Differential gears. Brake systems. Loads on brakes. Drum brakes and disc brakes: thermomechanical dimensioning. Steering systems. Understeering and oversteering. Directional stability. Suspensions and their influence on the static and dynamic vehicle behavior. Kinematic analysis and dimensioning of rigid axle and / or independent suspensions. Vehicle frames and chassis: chassis and cockpit design. Safety issues. Automotive crashworthiness. Noise, Vibration, Harshness. Current inherent legislation.
