Materials - a.y. 2016/2017

CFU: 6

Period (Year/Semester): III/I

Languade: Italian

Required/expected prior knowledge: Chemistry

Bruno De Gennaro - Class A-L
Barbara Liguori - Class M-Z

Course objectives:
The course of Materials is directed to providing future mechanical engineers those basic knowledge on the structure (on nano- and micro-metric scale), on the chemical and physical properties, on the durability and compatibility of the materials in the various conditions of use. These concepts are indispensable for a suitable choice for the proper management of the main materials of industrial engineering interest, both in the design phase and in the conduction of the plants.

Tables of contents:
Materials of engineering interest: structure, microstructure and transformations. Chemical and physical properties of materials and their dependence on the nature of the constituent solids. Interaction of materials with the environments they may come into contact. Solids and their transformations: structure, defects, phase transitions. Phase diagrams. Relations between structure and properties (chemical, physical, mechanical, electrical, etc.) of materials. Production, use and durability of materials. Ceramic materials for structural and/or thermomechanical use. The sintering process. Conventional ceramic materials. Refractories. Glasses. Glass-ceramics.Advanced Ceramic Materials: Production technologies and practical application of the main materials used in industrial fields. Metal materials: production and properties in relationship with their structures. Organic materials. Polymers and polymerization. Thermoplastic and thermosetting resins. Elastomers. Composite materials: Matrix and reinforcement definition as the main composite constituent. Matrix and reinforcement function. Polymeric, ceramic and metal matrix composite materials. Practical examples of some FRP and CMC.

Education method:
Lessons and practice exercises.
