At the end of the course, the students will be able to operate in the energy management field (energy efficiency and renewable energy sources), in industrial applications and buildings; both technical and economic points of view will be considered.

Energy sources: classification, environmental impact. Legislative framework: energy and climate action plan 20-20-20, Kyoto and post Kyoto policies, Directives on energy efficiency in buildings, incentives for renewable energies and energy efficiency. Electric energy and natural gas markets. Technologies and strategies for energy efficiency improvements: engineering and economic analysis of gas furnaces; compression and absorption heat pumps; heat exchanger networks for process integration; combined heat and power systems; variable-speed drives; multi-effect evaporators and mechanical vapour recompression. Renewable-based energy systems: engineering and economic analysis of wind turbines, photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems, Concentrated Solar Power systems, biomass plants, hydroelectric plants.
Lessons and exercises on practical problems.

Assessment will be written (open question, numerical exercises) and oral.
