Course objectives:
This course provides  the principal concepts and methods of heat transfer. The objectives of this course are: to develop the fundamental principles and laws of heat transfer and to explore the implications of these principles for system behavior; to formulate the models necessary to study, analyze and design heat transfer systems through the application of these principles; to develop the problem-solving skills essential to good engineering practice of heat transfer in real-world applications.

Introduction to the heat transfer mechanism: the basic equations of conduction, radiation and convection. Conduction: Introduction; Steady one-dimensional heat conduction; Heat transfer from extended surfaces; Steady two and three dimensional heat conduction; Transient conduction; Finite difference equations for conduction problems; Finite difference methods. Radiation: Introduction; Processes and characteristics; Blackbody radiation; Diffuse gray surface radiation exchange; Characteristics of real surfaces;  Radiation exchange between surfaces. Convection: Introduction; The governing equations for: mass, momentum and energy transport; Forced and natural convection: boundary layer; Boundary layer equations; Dimensional analysis in convection; External and internal flow; Laminar and turbulent flow; Correlations for the evaluation of local and average convection coefficient. Combined heat transfer mechanisms. Heat exchangers.
