Internal Combustion Engines - a.y. 2016/2017

CFU: 9

Period (Year/Semester): I/I

Languade: Italian

Required/expected prior knowledge: Nothing

Lecturers: Senatore Adolfo - Bozza Fabio

Course objectives:
Give to the students a complete panorama of modern internal combustion engine behavior and development, with reference to automotive, marine, and energy production applications. Understand the methods for regulation and control of the powertrain, depending on the injected fuels, either traditional or alternative. Comprehendand assess the emission of noxious species, with emphasis on current normative for vehicle’s homologation and testing.

Tables of contents:
Historical notes and description of internal combustion engines(ICEs)- Classification: Spark Ignition (SI) and Compression Ignition (CI) Engines - Ideal Cycles –Notes on combustion reactions – Real cycle of a 4-stroke engine and phase distribution – Realcycle of a 2-stroke engine - Effect of the various engine parameters on the real cycle - Combustion in SI and CI engines –Fuels for SI and CI engines - Power calculation - Performance curves - Thermal balance –Fuel supply and mixture formation in SI engines - Ignition systems for SI engines –Fuel supply and mixture formation in CI engines –Power control strategies - Alternative fuels - Lubrication and cooling - Formation and abatement of pollutants in SI and CI engines - Emission standards - Engine test benches - The dynamics of ICEs. - Variable valve distribution –Supercharging and turbocharging –ICEs evolution in the near future –Noise emission from the ICEs–Impact of ICEs on air pollution - Auxiliary components (water pump, oil pump, EGR valve, turbocharging schemes) - Modeling of SI Engines - 0D, 1D, and 3D Models –Combustion and turbulence model - chemical kinetics.
